ABOUT ABOUT

Join us at the Trinity River Audubon Center for a very special lecture with Seth Patterson of the Gorgas Science Foundation and renowned wildlife artist Raul Andrade on the subject of hummingbirds.  Raul recently partnered with author John C. Arvin and artists Sangeetha Kadur
and Vydhehi Kadur, as well as the Gorgas Science Foundation, to create the fine art book, Hummingbirds of the World, Volume 1

Volume One is the first of two monumental publications showcasing every hummingbird species in the world. One of a kind and measuring in at 12x16 inches, no other book has so ambitiously attempted to capture in such exquisite detail the beauty and diversity of these magnificent little birds.  Many years of planning and research went into the production of this publication. It features 127 species of hummingbirds found in North America, Central America, and the Caribbean Islands.

Each individual species has been meticulously studied and artistically rendered to showcase their beauty and splendor. They are set in a scene reflective of their range and environment. Also included is the preferred flowering plant that each species is most associated or the plant for which it serves as exclusive pollinator. Unique life history, distribution, adaptations, morphology and conservation status is noted in the text.

This book has been a labor of love done entirely in-house. Gorgas Science Foundation is a 501(3)c not-for-profit organization based out of Brownsville, Texas. We have a long history of helping to promote the conservation of some of the world’s most biodiverse regions, including the cloud forests of North-eastern Mexico, the Western Ghats along the Malabar Coast of India, and, closer to home, the Sabal Palm forests of South Texas. Presently, our home base is Sabal Palm Sanctuary, one of the premiere birding destinations in the country. The proceeds from this book will go towards supporting our continued work in developing volume 2 as well as our conservational and educational work at Sabal Palm Sanctuary.

After the lecture there will be a book signing and a public viewing of the original artwork.  Guests may also join Audubon staff for a guided bird hike at 8:30 AM prior to the lecture.
